Sunrooms are beautiful and bright, and they’re a popular option when people are improving their homes. Unfortunately, all that gorgeous light flooding into your sunroom can increase your energy costs and fade your flooring and furniture. How can you shield your sunroom without robbing it of the very thing you love about it?

The first thing to consider is the purpose of your sunroom. Is it your place to relax and curl up with a good book? Do you use it as an office, working on your computer, or as a tv room? Is your sunroom full of plants that need the sunlight but also need protection from too much direct heat? These different uses for the same room will impact the type of window coverings you need. You could choose curtains or blinds, but those window coverings tend to obstruct your view. What’s more, although blinds allow you to easily adjust the amount of light coming in, they’re often not made in a wide enough style to accommodate a sunroom’s wide windows. Ultimately, the best window coverings for your sunroom will probably be shades.

  • Roller ShadesRoller shades are affordable and come in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and textures. They can be pulled all the way down for privacy or rolled all the way up to allow an unobstructed view. You can find cordless or motorized shades and, whichever type you choose, they are durable and easy to clean. There are also shades in a wide range of opacity levels. Solar shades are very similar to roller shades and they’re a good option as well, allowing you to visibility as well as protection from UV rays.
  • Cellular/Honeycomb Shades: These are perfect for a sunroom in need of insulation. Made with a honeycomb design, cellular shades can keep out chilly drafts in a cold climate and high temperatures in a hot one. They’re affordably priced, stack tightly to allow you a clear view, and are available in a wide variety of colors and cell sizes. Cellular shades come cordless or motorized, are durable and low-maintenance, and can even have top-down features.
  • Woven Shades: Typically made of bamboo or wood, these are a popular choice for designers. Because they’re made of natural materials, they create a harmonious feeling in the sunroom, making it feel connected to the outside. They come in a wide range of natural materials and colors, can be made with a liner for added opacity, are available in top-down options, and can be cordless or motorized.
