If you’re refreshing the look of your home, you might consider a new coat of paint, buying new furniture, or changing out accessories like throw pillows and rugs. What a lot of people don’t look at, though, is their window coverings. New window coverings can make a world of difference in the look of your home. Here’s how you know when to replace yours:

  • If your blinds are warped, bent, or broken, it’s time to invest in some new ones. Moisture warps wooden blinds, and faux wood blinds can bend in heat. Aluminum blinds can dent and bend, and their cords can be hazardous. If you live somewhere hot, consider upgrading from faux wood to solar shades. If you’re looking to upgrade your aluminum blinds, look to honeycomb or cellular cordless or roller shades. They’re an excellent option: child-friendly, durable, easy to clean, and available in all opacities, from light-filtering to room-darkening.
  • When you have trouble opening and closing your window treatments, move on to something easier. If the blinds, shades, or curtains are hard to open or close, the mechanisms are damaged or worn out or the tracks may be jammed. Old, motorized blinds and shades can wear out, too, but the good news is that technology has greatly improved. Today, you can choose from all kinds of blinds, including motorization options from rechargeable to “smart”. Why not replace your outdated window treatments with some that can be opened from your smart phone?
  • If the slats are discolored, the fabrics are faded or frayed, or your window coverings are out of style, it’s time for something new. Over the years, the sun and use can fade your indoor window coverings, and exposure to the elements can discolor your wooden shutters. Curtains and Roman shades can become worn and frayed from use or simply age. What’s more, today’s styles are much different than the window coverings from a few years back. If you want to improve the look of your house, update your window treatments.
  • Sometimes, you just need window coverings that are more functional. Maybe you’ve installed new windows, and need window coverings that don’t just match the window but also contribute to the room in terms of light control, energy-efficiency, and privacy. Or maybe you’re just due for some updated curtains that help you shut the light out of your bedroom, some cordless blinds to make your kids’ rooms safer, or shades or blinds with solar insulation properties to cut your home’s energy costs. Today’s window treatments open a world of possibilities!
