Curtains and blinds are two of the most popular window treatments available. How do you know which one is right for you? Understand the difference between curtains and blinds to determine which one satisfies your light control needs, energy efficiency requirements, and cleaning expectations, all while meeting your decor preferences and budget.

Cost

Blinds: Plastic blinds have the lowest material cost, while wood, faux wood, and high-quality vinyl blinds cost more.

Curtains: Prices vary widely depending on the material and size of curtain you need. If your goal is to reduce costs, choose cotton panels over linen or silk. Keep in mind that you must also purchase a rod to hang your curtains on.

Ease of Installation

Blinds: In 10 to 20 minutes, you can install brackets in a window frame, mount the blinds, and attach the operating mechanism.

Curtains: You typically need two people to level and mount curtain brackets, slide the panels onto the rod, and secure the rod onto the brackets.

Light Control Options

Blinds: Most blinds allow you to tilt the slats in addition to pulling them up and down. Be aware that light will creep in along the edges, making it impossible to fully darken the room using blinds.

Curtains: While curtains provide less light control overall, you can install sheer, light-filtering, room-darkening, or blackout curtains to suit your needs.

Energy Efficiency

Blinds: While they can increase window insulation slightly, blinds with slats are mostly designed for light control and privacy. You can improve home efficiency by selecting custom blinds made of high-quality materials.

Curtains: Sheer curtains do little to improve insulation, but heavy, floor-length curtains can make a big difference. Close the curtains to keep in the heat during the winter and keep out the sun during the summer.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Blinds: Dusting blinds is usually quite easy. Simply wipe the slats with a soft, damp cloth or vacuum them using a brush attachment.

Curtains: The best way to clean curtains is to take the panels down and wash them in the washing machine. Be aware that some curtains may be dry clean only, so be sure to read the care tag.

Visual Appeal

Blinds: It’s easy to customize window blinds thanks to the many colors, materials, and slat widths available, making them an attractive addition to any room.

Curtains: From solid colors to bold floral prints to geometric patterns, there’s no end to the design possibilities of curtains. They serve as a true piece of home decor and can be coordinated with furniture, rugs, and other accessories.
