Are you tired of the way the cords look on your blinds or shades? After all, they disrupt the clean lines of your window coverings with ugly loops and cables. If you have children or pets, those dangling cords are more than just an eyesore—they could also be a safety hazard.

For the sleekest, safest window coverings, consider cutting the cord and opting for an alternative lift system. Be aware that most cordless blinds and shades function using internal pulleys, but they don’t have cables on the outside. Here are some of the variations available, depending on what kind of cordless window covering you choose.

Rail System

The most common cordless systems feature a rail on the bottom slat (and the top slat in the case of top-down/bottom-up shades). This type of cordless window covering can be lifted and lowered simply by grabbing the bottom rail and physically moving it up or down to the desired position.

Some rail systems feature lift-and-lock technology, with a small, built-in button that you press and hold while moving the blinds. Once positioned properly, release the button to lock the blinds in place.

Magnets

Roman shades feature pleats that neatly stack as you raise them. Cordless versions conceal magnets within the pleats, allowing the shade to glide up and down with effortless control and no external cords required.

Panel Tracks

Panel tracks are the alternative to rail systems for vertical blinds and shades. Most feature a wand, not a cord, which you can use to slide the slats from left to right. To change the angle of the slats, twist the wand clockwise or counterclockwise.

Motorization

Traditional Venetian blinds and vertical window coverings require a wand to control them. If you don’t want your window treatments to have this feature, motorized operation is a good alternative. This allows you to use a remote control or smartphone to lift and lower the shades or move vertical blinds from side to side.

Motorization presents the opportunity for automation. You can set routines to automatically open and close the blinds at specific times or based on the sun’s position in the sky. You can even control multiple blinds at once with the touch of a button, moving them to the precise angle and height you want without getting off the sofa.
