Motorized Duette® shades and NewStyle® shutters in Montaine

Overview

When the Reel family moved into their home in the Montaine neighborhood, they needed a custom window covering solution that served two entirely different purposes. The design aesthetic was unified; the functional needs were not.

The back of the home overlooks Colorado open space, which makes those expansive windows the house's greatest feature. They wanted to preserve every bit of that natural light and the view, while improving energy efficiency during the workday.

The front and side windows had the opposite problem: privacy from nearby neighbors, plus a classic, high-end look from the street.

The challenge

Every home has unique needs, and this project was a clear example of why one product rarely fits all of them.

Motorized Hunter Douglas Duette® shades

For the rear of the home, we installed motorized Duette® Honeycomb Shades. Their cellular construction traps air at the window, which is what makes them one of the best insulating window coverings available — it regulates indoor temperature year-round.

Motorization is what made it effortless. Instead of adjusting every shade by hand, the family runs a schedule: open at sunrise, close when everyone leaves for work, reopen before they get home, close again about 20 minutes after sunset.

The result is a home with the view and the daylight when the family is there, and better efficiency during the hottest part of the day when they are not.

Hunter Douglas NewStyle® shutters

For the front and sides of the home, we recommended NewStyle® composite shutters. They give you the look of painted hardwood with better durability and easier maintenance.

Adjustable louvers let the family take in natural light without feeling exposed to the neighbors — the balance of privacy and openness they were after. From the street, the shutters give the home a clean, upscale line that suits its architecture.

Why these products were the right choice

One of the biggest misconceptions in window coverings is that every room should get the same product. In practice, the right answer depends on how each space is actually used.

Duette® shades delivered insulation, unobstructed views, and automation where efficiency mattered most. NewStyle® shutters delivered durability and adjustable privacy where the family interacted with neighboring homes. Designing each area around the homeowner's priorities is what made the whole house work.
