Sleep better, watch better, in real darkness

Some rooms need to go dark on demand — nurseries, primary bedrooms, and media rooms. Room-darkening and blackout shades block the light so you can sleep in on weekends and the screen looks its best with zero glare.

Who it's best for

  • Bedrooms and nurseries where sleep matters
  • Home theaters and media rooms with screen glare
  • Shift workers and light sleepers
  • Sunny, east- or west-facing rooms

Your options, in plain terms

Duette® room-darkening cellular shades

Duette® shades use a patented cell-in-a-cell construction that blocks light and insulates at the same time — dark and energy-efficient in one shade. Our top pick for a bedroom you want to sleep in.

Duolite® — two shades in one

A blackout shade rolls down behind a light-filtering shade on a single headrail, so the same window goes from soft daylight to full dark without swapping anything.

Vignette® Roman Shades

A modern take on the classic Roman shade, in flat or teardrop folds. Room darkening comes from a heavier fabric — or by pairing it with the Duolite® system for true blackout.

Worth thinking through

Design considerations

Side gaps matter

True darkness depends on how the shade meets the window frame. We measure and recommend mounts that minimize the light leak around the edges — the detail that separates 'dim' from 'dark.'

Inside vs. outside mount

An outside mount that overlaps the opening blocks far more edge light than an inside mount. Where darkness is the priority, we usually steer toward overlap; where trim is beautiful, we balance the two.

Darkness and insulation together

Because Duette® darkens and insulates at once, a room-darkening choice in a bedroom often lowers the energy bill too — worth weighing if the room runs hot or cold.

Good to know

Common questions

What's the difference between room-darkening and blackout?

Room-darkening greatly reduces light; blackout fabrics block nearly all of it. For nurseries and media rooms we usually recommend the darkest fabric with a mount that limits side gaps.

Can one shade give me both daylight and full dark?

Yes — that's exactly what the Duolite® system does. A light-filtering shade and a room-darkening shade share one headrail, so you choose the mood without changing window coverings.

Do room-darkening shades also save energy?

Duette® room-darkening cellular shades do. The honeycomb cells trap air at the glass, so the same shade that darkens the room also slows heat transfer in winter and summer.
